It’s time to finish your summer planning!

With the school year ending soon, it’s time to put the finishing touches on your kid’s summer plans.

Most school districts have about 8-10 weeks of summer break. This is a chance for YOU to have them learn and grow according to what you think is important. Here’s a way to think of possible activities:

  • A skill you want them to have (cooking, swimming, drawing, sewing, music)

  • A profession you want them to look at (engineering, journalism, medicine, law)

  • An introductory course to help ease an academic challenge coming up next school year (math,

    writing, science)

  • Sports-related skills (soccer, tennis, football, basketball)

  • Time away from home learning to take care of themselves (away camps & programs)

  • Rising seniors can begin writing essays for college and scholarship applications. Here’s a link to an essay writing workbook.

These are a few places to look for activities:

  • The local community college (these often have offerings for middle school & high school

    students)

  • Colleges – often have pre-college programs for high school students (these are especially good for kids considering college)

  • The YMCA and Recreation department – especially for sports activities

  • Public & Private schools – these sometimes have interesting summer programs outside of the

    usual classroom experience

  • Drama, Dance, and Arts centers – often give introductory classes for beginners

Need more ideas? Talk around! Some parent you know has a great summer activity you could use!

Just remember, seats are usually limited and the most interesting programs fill up around the first of June.
